From this, a detailed profile of a child's intellectual abilites is constructed. This profile can then be compared with their academic achievements, which allows for areas of underperformance to be identified. If any such areas exist, a number of steps can be taken. First, additional assessments can be carried out to see if the child has specific difficulty with some aspect of academic functioning - for example, with reading or writing. There might be evidence of dyslexia or another problem such as dyspraxia. Second, more detailed examination of specific intellectual abilites can be conducted to clarify what aspects of thinking, reasoning or memory might be affected and in what way. Thirdly, whether or not there is evidence of any specific problem, the teaching methods can be considered to see, for example, if they are matching the child's spectrum of abilites.
